Specific care for wool garments

specific wool garment care

Wool has exceptional characteristics of its own that allow it to adapt to a wide variety of weather conditions.

We will like to wear wool because it has the ability to trap in its fibers the air warmed by the body. It is therefore a fiber of choice in humid or rainy weather. Wool fabrics do not retain odors and are much more durable than other fibers. They also require less maintenance than synthetic fibers and cotton, saving energy and water.

wool from ecological impacts

Wool has limited ecological impacts which mainly reside in the antiparasitic treatment of animals. However, it is not a fiber without ecological impact and we may want to take a critical look at it.

As with all fabrics, maintenance plays a big role in its lifespan and the ecological footprint left. Due to its particular properties, wool cannot be maintained like most of our clothes.

General rules

For all clothing whose design is mainly made of wool, we will favor delicate hand washing in cold water. Otherwise, it is possible to put the garment in a washing bag and put it in the delicate cycle of your washer, taking care to select cold water. Here you must at all costs not put the garment in the dryer but rather lay it out flat to let it dry while taking care to restore its shape.

Maintenance in case of a problem

maintenance in case of a problem

For any unfortunate stains you may have on a wool garment, you must act quickly. The first step is to immediately blot up any liquid with an absorbent cloth. The nature of the stain requires you to adapt slightly. Regardless of the preferred method, you should avoid rubbing the wool for too long and too roughly as it will be damaged. The key ingredients are white vinegar, water, and rubbing alcohol.

Alcohol or fruit juice stain

Mix equal parts hot water and rubbing alcohol. Dab the stain delicately using small, quick movements. Finally, have the garment without waiting for the stain to dry.

Coffee stain

Mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. Soak the garment in this mixture for a few hours. Finally, lay the garment flat on a towel and gently blot the stain with an absorbent cloth.

Blood stain

In the case of a blood stain, the use of COLD water is essential. Rub the blood gently with white vinegar. Soak a cloth in cold water and dab gently. Repeat if necessary.

Is the garment foaming?

Not everyone needs to have a machine to cut the foam from a wool sweater. You can also take a razor and gently run it over the areas that bother you. This is a technique that requires a little delicacy so as not to cut the fiber and damage the stitches of the garment.

Does the clothing sting you?

Often we hear that people don't wear wool because it stings the skin. You may want to favor merino wool which is very soft. Otherwise, there are tips to help you.

ecological tips for maintenance

To prevent wool clothing from pricking your skin, you can place it, a few hours before washing it, in the freezer in a waterproof, airtight bag or on the washing line in winter. Then, using a mild soap, you can wash it normally. Finally, to give yourself a better chance of alleviating the stinging sensation, you can soak it in water that contains hair conditioner and then rinse it gently.

A wool sweater does not have to be maintained every time it is used!

You will be able to wear it at least ten times before having to wash it. This allows for a better lifespan and a considerable reduction in your ecological footprint ! You can also find other eco-friendly tips for caring for your clothes by clicking here .
