What exactly is Castile soap?
Before telling you about our Quebec version, let's take a quick look back in time. Castile soap takes its name from the Castile region of Spain, where a pure soap, free of animal fats, made from olive oil, has been produced since the Middle Ages. An ancestral recipe that has spanned the centuries... and for good reason: it works.
What fundamentally distinguishes Castile soap from conventional soaps sold in grocery stores is what it does not contain: no harsh sulfates (SLS/SLES), no parabens, no synthetic fragrances, no artificial dyes, no chemical preservatives. Its formula is based solely on the saponification of vegetable oils, a natural process that produces a gentle, biodegradable soap that is as respectful of your skin as it is of the environment. Eco Loco liquid Castile soap: made here, for you
At Eco Loco, we decided to create our own liquid Castile soap, made directly in Quebec. Why? Because we believed it was possible to do even better: a minimalist, local formula, with a list of ingredients that you can read and understand without being a chemist.
Full list of ingredients (INCI):

Aqua, Potassium Olivate, Potassium Sunflowerseedate, Vegetable Glycerin, Citric Acid
That's it. Five ingredients. No hiding, no frills.
• Potassium Olivate: potassium saponified olive oil — nourishing, gentle on the skin, and biodegradable
• Potassium Sunflowerseedate: saponified sunflower oil — light, rich in vitamin E, ideal for moisturizing without leaving a greasy residue
• Vegetable Glycerin: natural vegetable-derived humectant that attracts moisture and protects the skin barrier
• Citric Acid: balances the soap's pH to optimize its effectiveness and gentleness
A 100% vegan formula, palm oil-free, with no animal-derived ingredients. And made just around the corner.

What is liquid Castile soap used for? (Hint: almost everything)

This is where Castile soap becomes truly fascinating. Its versatility is its greatest asset. A single bottle can replace half a dozen products in your bathroom and under your sink. Here's how to use it daily:
Body care
A few drops in your hands or on a washcloth: you get a natural shower gel that lathers well, cleans without stripping, and leaves skin soft. Its vegetable glycerin moisturizes while you wash. No need for lotion afterward, at least not as much as with conventional soap.
Shampoo and scalp care
Castile soap can be used as a diluted shampoo (1 part soap to 3 parts water). It gently cleanses the scalp without harshness.
Hand soap
Pour some concentrated Castile soap into a dispenser and top it up with water. You have a natural, fragrance-free, effective, and economical liquid hand soap. Ideal for sensitive skin — including children's.
Multipurpose household cleaner
Diluted in water in a spray bottle, Castile soap becomes a cleaner for countertops, sinks, tables, and even floors. It degreases without leaving chemical residue. Perfect for surfaces that come into contact with food.
Basic recipe: 1 tbsp Castile soap in 500 ml of water → all-purpose surface cleaner.
Washing fruits and vegetables
A drizzle of Castile soap diluted in a large bowl of water helps rinse fruits and vegetables of pesticide residues or waxes. Rinse thoroughly with clear water afterward.
Pet bathing
Gentle and fragrance-free, Castile soap is often used as shampoo for short-haired pets or for an emergency bath. Always rinse thoroughly.
Who is Castile soap for?
The true strength of Castile soap is that it suits almost everyone:
• Sensitive or reactive skin appreciates the absence of fragrances, dyes, and chemical preservatives. Vegetable glycerin helps maintain skin hydration without irritation.
• Families with young children find it a safe cleaner, free of questionable ingredients to memorize or avoid.
• People on a zero-waste journey love the fact that a single product replaces multiple plastic bottles. Fewer purchases, less packaging, less space under the sink.
• People simplifying their routine (minimalists, travelers, slow living enthusiasts) appreciate having a versatile, concentrated product that travels well and lasts a long time.
• Conscious consumers who want to support the local economy and choose products whose composition they understand.

Conventional soap is formulated to lather abundantly and smell good, thanks to additives that can irritate the skin, disrupt the skin microbiome, and pollute water when rinsed. Castile soap, however, does the same cleaning job with a formula that nature could have invented itself.
Tips for use and practical advice
• Always dilute for household use. Concentrated Castile soap is powerful — a few drops are enough. Do not use it neat on fragile surfaces.
• Do not mix directly with white vinegar. Vinegar (acid) and Castile soap (base) neutralize each other if combined in the same container. Use them separately.
- • Shake well before use. Vegetable glycerin may separate slightly - this is normal, and a sign that the product is natural and free of artificial emulsifiers.
• Start with a small amount. We are often used to commercial soaps that require large doses to lather. Castile soap is concentrated: less is more.
