In the last article, we told you about a versatile and ecological product, namely baking soda . Today, we are going to present another product that can be used for several purposes: Fuller's earth .
What is the land of Sommières ?
Sommières clay was discovered during the 19th century in Sommières, a village in France. It is a clay that comes in the form of a powder and can have color variations, ranging from beige to green. Nowadays, it also comes from several countries around the Mediterranean Sea such as Morocco and Turkey where it is found under the name Fez Soap.
The particularity of this clay is its absorbent power : it can absorb up to 80% of its weight in liquid thanks to the layered arrangement of its components. Liquids can thus be inserted into the spaces between the layers.
Benefits
Being extracted directly from the ground and having undergone no transformation, Sommières earth is an ecological and biodegradable product. It is also non-toxic.
It is also an economical product, as it replaces other more expensive products that perform the same tasks.
Uses
Detach
Being highly absorbent, Fuller's earth is primarily used as a dry stain remover. Since it doesn't require water to be effective, it can remove stains from non-washable surfaces or objects. This product is therefore perfect for cleaning leather, silk, sofa fabric, carpets, wool, car seats, or natural stone floors. It's one of the best products for grease stains.
To use it , simply sprinkle the Sommières earth evenly over the stain to be removed, then leave it to act for a few hours to a whole day depending on the size of the stain and the time since the incident. You don't even need to rub! To remove the product, simply vacuum.
If your stain is stubborn, you can heat the surface of your object or fabric with a hair dryer before sprinkling the product. You can also use an iron depending on the fabric you are treating.
Deodorize
In addition to being a good stain remover, this product is also a good deodorizer. It is therefore perfect for removing odors such as cigarette smoke, urine, or sweat. To do this, sprinkle it on or in the object to be deodorized and let it sit.
Depending on the composition of the odor, the effectiveness of Sommières earth can vary, so it is advisable to mix it with baking soda , as the two products do not absorb gas molecules in the same way.
Pet owners, this product is ideal for cleaning up urine or stool stains from your dog or cat, as it will absorb the remaining mess while removing the odor.
Revive the shine
If your white fabrics have become dull and your colors are less vibrant, you can soak them in a sink filled with hot water to which you have added 2 tablespoons of Fuller's earth. Let them soak for 2 hours, then wash your fabrics on the usual cycle.
To clean
For budding artists or house painters, Fuller's earth is ideal for cleaning your dirty hands. Create a paste by mixing it with a little water, then rub it into your hands. Rinse, then wash your hands with your regular soap for spotless hands.
Other information
As Sommières earth is very absorbent for both liquids and gases, it is important to store your product in a dry place and in an airtight bag or container.
Also, before using this product on a surface or fabric, it is always important to test it first on an inconspicuous area. This will avoid unpleasant surprises if your object does not react as you had expected.
